Substrate

Terrarium Sand

Terrarium sand comes in a wide variaty of colours. I use the colours white, orange and red.

Aquarium Gravel

I use aquarium gravel to give the substrate a rocky appearance. I use gravel with a diameter of 3mm (0.11") and 6mm (0.23")

Humus and Cork

Humus is used as a substitute to earth and mixed with sand it creates a substrate that is suitable for digging. The pieces of cork are used as hiding places.

the end result

This is the end result. The substrate is a mixture of terrarium sand (45%), Humus (45%) and Aquarium gravel (10%). The humus keeps the substrate moist for species that need moisture and it can also be dried out completely for desert species. On top of the substrate is some additional aquarium gravel to create the rocky look and a piece of cork as hiding place.
